Plagiarism with Students (Reflective Thought Plagiarism p.38)

Today the Internet allows many students around the world the opportunity to cheat or plagiarize. The Internet allows the students to copy and paste information in their papers and that is plagiarism. There are many reasons students plagiarize work, reasonings being peer pressure, the nature of "busy work", and the accessbility to the Internet. Even with all these reasons plagiarism is not the way to go and is not worth the trouble.
One reason you should not plagiarize is that the professors have many different types of software to determine if a student has plagiarized. The software the professors are provided with compare suspected papers to those papers on the Internet to see if the content in the papers matchup. Also teachers can use different types of search engines and these seem to be very useful for catching plagiarizors. One way not to plagiarize is to give credit to the person you received the information from. By citing your sources internally and on a bibliography, you take the risk away of getting caught for plagiarism. Another way to avoid plagiarism is to paraphase information. Put it your own words. The fact that you could easily get caught plagiarizing and fail the course should stop you from doing it immediately. Plagiarizing is not worth your time and the trouble, even though you can get your paper done quicker, take the time, research the topic, and write your own paper and you will never have to worry about getting a zero or getting kicked out of college.

  2. I totally agree with you. Plagiarism is wrong and no one should even try to think about doing it. Most likely you would get caught in doing so, why would you want to take the chance of failing a class or even having the chance of getting kicked out of college. I believe the only reason why people plagiarize is because they are to lazy and do not want to do the work or they waited till the last night and even if they pulled an all nighter there would still be no way in completing the work on time. So what i am trying to say is do not plagiarize because you will get caught and you will regret in doing so.

  3. I agree plagirism is not worth the risk. It is a lazy way to write a paper and is stealing someone else's thoughts and ideas. Plagirism was an easy thing to do before the internet, but with all the tools now available to professors you are going to get caught. When the offense makes it into your public record you will be kicked out of colloge and won't be able to get into another college. It is not work risking your entire future just because you want to be lazy one for one paper or assignment.

  4. This is a very good point. I would hope that people have stopped plagiarizing so much now, since it is so easy for teachers to find out. Also, we all understand that the consequences are severe, so why risk it? However, I'm sure that a lot of people plagiarize by accident. Sometimes when you do a lot of research, you just remember the information and can't remember where you found it. So then when you're writing the paper, you may not even realize that certain information came from a source, thinking that it is your own. This can be very tricky, but it is important to pay close attention to where information is coming from so you don't get caught plagiarizing.

  5. I agree with your idea. I think plagiarism or cheat is really shamed, and unfair to those students who are hard-working. I prefer to turn in the homework which did not well rather than turn in an excellent homework but it’s plagiarism. Some people think maybe the professors will not so strict, and actually they don’t use software to check every time. But as long as they find you have plagiarized, I think everything is over. That will be a bad record in your whole life. But it doesn’t mean we should create all words by ourselves. Learn how to find information on Internet or in library, and make reference properly will be much helpful.

  6. I totally agree with your idea. Plagiarism is the first thing advisor emphasized that we cannot do when we entered the university. Not only does it obstacle our progress in study, but it does harm to the authors. Some students may think it is not a big problem to plagiarize a few times. However, if everyone does once, it will be a big problem. Just like the famous explanation to unethical behavior, "If it is not right for everyone to do something, then it is not right to do it." Definitely, all of us want to be successful businessmen in the future, but the first step to success is being ethic rather than plagiarism or cheat.

  7. I agree that plagiarism is something that should be stopped. I think that if someone is able to put in their hard work and effort, anyone else should be able to as well. The fact of the matter is, an author of a source has already helped in that they provide you with information about the topic that is being researched. It is only right that you show them respect by citing them for their work. I think that intentional plagiarism is a serious offense, and I do not see any problem with failing a student because of their choice to do so.

  8. I do like your point. Plagiarism is a shameful and dangerous way to finish your paper. I have seen a research about the plagiarism on the Internet before. It showed that the success ratio of plagiarism was less than 17%. Even though the plagiarizer cheats the professor and the computer successfully, the chance for the plagiarizer to get a high score on the paper is still lower than 1/3. So try to rethink about it, it's not wise to plagiarize in your paper.

  9. I agree with your post. Many students think plagiarism is a quick way to finish a paper, but it is very easy to get caught. Since plagiarism has become such a big problem, companies are developing software that can identify when a student has plagiarized. Students should learn to manage their time better in order to finish things on time with their own thoughts. The consequences of plagiarizing are very strict and students often times don't realize that until it's too late.

  10. I totally agree with you. Even though it's so easy to plagiarize it's not worth the risk of getting caught and failing a course or getting kicked out of college. I use internet sources in my papers all the time but I always site them and paraphrase too. Although I do paraphrase I still quote the source because I am using that person's ideas. I once had a professor tell me that if I didn't site the source that it can still be considered plagiarism even though I turned the other persons words into my own.

  11. I agree with you point on plagiarism because I have seen a lot of students do it and just think about how much they are risking just to get done a little quicker. I would think that just the fact that you could be kicked out of college that more students would give up on using plagiarism. This is not the case though even though there are many ways to find out if someone has plagiarized.

  12. Well, I cannot agree more about what you said. All knowledge is built from previous knowledge. As we read, study, perform experiments, and gather perspectives, we are using other people's ideas. Building on other people's ideas, we create our own. When you put your ideas on paper, your instructors want to distinguish between the building block ideas borrowed from other people and your own newly reasoned perspectives or conclusions. You make these distinctions in a written paper by citing the sources for your building block ideas. Giving clear credit for ideas matters in the professional community as well as in school. So this may not be considered as a cause.

  13. Nothing is worth losing all you have. Your dignity and identity will never restore back to it's original form. I don't understand why people do it. I always quote sources word for word and sight because I am still a little scared about para phrasing. I am afraid I will not do it correctly and get punished for an accident. Plagerism is not worth loosing your whole life over, but still others seem to test the limits. These are probablly the people who look for loop holes in every rule they come across. They are always the ones living on the edge. I don't even let my gas light come one because I am afraid to run out of gas. These people probablly pull into the gas station on fumes.

  15. I agree plagiarzing is wrong and I'm glad teachers have the software to catch it. Taking shortcuts on your papers by plagiarzing is going to end up taking shortcuts on life. Plagiarzing isn't worth the risk or the credit. Its not very hard to put information into your own words. Just takes time and effort. Being lazy and plagiarzing work will get you no where in life.
